MISSING TIGERS AROUND TADOBA-ANDHARI TIGER RESERVE
Sunday, June 7, 2009
The man-Tiger conflict is believed to have ended in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve region, with large Tiger population going missing. News have been continuously making rounds, regarding corpse of Tigers found in Chandrapur district near the forest reserve.
A pair of Tigers had gone missing from the area some time back, while on March 24, a Tigress went missing. On March 28, a charred carcass of a Tiger was found and on May 13, another three year old tiger was found dead near Ubhagota. These events have been really alarming for the forest officials and Government is having a serious look into the matter.
Government has ordered Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Mr. A K Sood, to investigate into the whole matter and to submit a report on the same. 11 human deaths in the year 2006, 14 in 2007 and 26 in 2008 had been reported, but this year the number has reduced to a single death in the area, in the past five months. The only reason seen behind the reduced death rate here is the sharply declining Tiger population.
The reason for some Tiger deaths is believed to be poisoning and poaching, while for other deaths it might be just due to starving. Rest will be clear only once the report is out.
