New Technology To Aid Tiger Conservationists

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

For any research or study to be carried out, one needs to have a proper analysis of the current situation. Similarly, Tiger conservationists too require accurate estimates of Tiger population before they embark on their task of Tiger protection and conservation. But since Tigers don't like anyone intruding in their personal territory, it makes difficult for the conservationists to get clear facts without disturbing the wild in their routine.

To facilitate this purpose, Conservation Research Ltd., has developed a software that creates a three dimensional image from scanned pictures. This software will be of great help to the wildlife researchers, who till now used more tedious methods like carefully scrutinizing hundreds of photos taken by camera 'traps' and studying its resemblance with the nature of stripes on the tiger skin, studying tiger pug marks, radio telemetry and animal sightings.

The new 3D method is said to make this task of conservationists easier by helping them in not just estimating the Tiger count but also the origin of a confiscated Tiger skin. Shots will be taken of the mighty animal using remote cameras, which will then be transformed into a 3D figure giving the Tiger a unique identity. With an effectiveness rate of up to 95 percent, this software seems to be like a remedy for the Tiger conservationists to measure Tiger population in a speedy and accurate way.
