Recently, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) has achieved a major breakthrough in the issue of illegal trade of birds in Delhi. WCCB Officials has seized 70 live birds that includes parrots and munias which are meant for sale from Central Delhi. This proves that the capital of India is still continues to be a major market for illegal trade of protected birds.
Ramesh Pandey, a WCCB official has informed that on the basis of a secret information, WCCB has conducted a raid in collaboration with local police on a locked room of a rented house in Daryaganj area in Central Delhi. WCCB Inspector Arti Singh has led the team and found the locked room where the birds were captivated.
During investigation it was revealed that owners of the house had no clues about the tenants, who had rented the rooms. Also, it was found that the accused has employed two minor boys of nearby locality to feed the birds. Moreover, Mr. Pandey has added that a case has been registered and a combing operation is carried on by the Police to get hold of the accused persons. But, till date no arrest has been made regarding this issue.
According to a WCCB official, caging of protected birds is an offense in which the accused are subjected to have a jail term of up to five years under the Wildlife Protection Act as the birds are categorized under Schedule 4 of the act.
Now, the WCCB has released the big birds to the Kamla Nehru Ridge wheras the young ones were sent to the zoo.
