Ready For Relook At Wildlife Protection Act
Sunday, July 12, 2009
Great news for all nature lovers. Indian Government is willing to have a “relook” at the Wildlife Protection Act. Government has taken this decision due to the excessive killing and poaching of Tigers in the country.
Jairam Ramesh, the Minister for Environment and Forests recently announced that the Indian Government has decided to amend the Wildlife Protection Act. As the age old Wildlife Protection Act is inefficient in controlling the illegal activities related to wildlife in India. Here, in India the law is so flexible that poachers easily escape from the claws of law.
The Wildlife Protection Act provides imprisonment of three to seven months and a fine of Rs 10,000 which are not all sufficient to stop the poaching and killing of Tigers in India.
The Minister has mentioned the case of Sariska and Panna Tiger Reserve where Tigers are locally extinct due to rampant poaching. To stop this illegal activity and get hold of the culprits, it become necessary for the Government to rectify the age old Wildlife Protection Act of India. Government has also decide to set up a green tribunal.
