Scientific And IT Based Management For Zoos

Sri Jayram Ramesh, the Union Minster of State for the Ministry of Environment and Forests has recently informed that the Indian Government has decided to introduce Scient IT based management system for proper management of zoos in India.

While addressing 23rd meeting of the Central Zoo Authority at New Delhi, Mr Ramesh has said that this Scientific and IT based management system will not only include management of animals but also management of biodiversity. It will serve dual purpose-one of preserving the flora and fauna and another of conserving the endangered species of the country. Indian zoos comprises of 130 species of trees and 1200 species of animals that needs to be taken care properly.

Shri Vijai Sharma, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Dr M B Lal, Addl. D G ,Wildlife, Dr B R Sharma ,Member Secretary, Central Zoo Authority ,Sh D N Singh, Director, Delhi Zoo and other officials participated in this meeting where Mr Ramesh has released a book named “ Zoos in India- Legislation, Policy, Guidelines and strategies”. This book is published by Central Zoo Authority. It provides detail information on Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, Recognition of Zoo Rules, National Zoo Policy, recognized zoos, various MoUs signed by CZA, concept paper on conservation breeding programme etc.

Moreover, the Minister has informed that our country is going to organize a exchange of animals at national and international level. While citing the example of exchange of Lions and Cheetahs between Gujrat and Singapore, he has said that our country has abundance of elephants which can also be used for this purpose
